Letter From the Editor – July

Welcome back to the Enova Advantage – a place dedicated to supporting the advancement of industry’s most important asset – people.

Our talent team at Enova is excited to welcome our community friends and partners into a brand-new quarter.  A recent labor & economy article from Politico this month said, “Wages are rising, employers are giving hiring bonuses and more Americans are quitting their jobs…the workers who were hit hardest by the pandemic are finally being empowered.”  Although this candidate-driven market is likely to lose momentum with time, it certainly makes recruitment and retention efforts challenging in a year where we are poised for considerable growth.

With the seasonality of many of our member businesses, we don’t have time to wait for the pendulum to swing in our favor.  Without workers, our ability to fulfill deadlines and meet annual targets diminishes.  As our management teams discuss how to combat these hiring and retention challenges, Enova has some simple advice – be patient and trust your processes.   If you are not sure if your processes are the right ones, begin with Enova’s HRHealthcheckTM to learn more.

It can be difficult to remain calm and demonstrate patience when business opportunity and growth eagerly awaits at your door.  Here are important items to note as you weigh your best course of action:

Silver Bullets Don’t Exist

Let’s do some math – with unemployment rates under 3.0%, there are only so many [insert skilled job title] to go around.  Acquiring skilled talent today likely requires the tactic of “robbing Peter to pay Paul.”  Attracting Peter’s employees with $1,000 sign-on bonuses and significant pay increases may very well only attract his most greedy employees.  This practice is not sustainable nor is it highly effective.  You may be wooed by silver-bullet solutions like this or the next high-tech company on the internet who claims to have technology that finds the most elusive candidates on the market.  This is simply inaccurate and plays on the emotions of the most desperate organizations and hiring managers.

I’ve spent more than a decade trying to identify the best methods to recruiting employees, and I’m pleased to share that Enova has found it – but it’s not easy…

Be Consistent, Be Persistent

The best recruitment solutions are only as good as your best processes, and your best processes may not always produce results as quickly as you would like (take a minute for that to sink in).  This means you first need to have processes that focus on attracting the employees that align with your culture, job expectations, and long-term vision of your organizations.  Once great processes are established, we must collect data, adjust as needed, and trust in the system.   This involves persistence and consistency.

In a world of seconds and minutes, it’s difficult to practice patience and persistence.  It can be difficult to accept that the silver recruitment and retention bullet hasn’t been fully digitized or mined from the interwebs like our cryptocurrency.  Don’t worry – Enova is here to guide you.  We’ve experienced the heartache and disappointment through countless hours of researching and testing so you don’t have to.

To learn more about what you can do to take control of your recruiting, training, and retention strategies, let’s chat – we saved you a seat at the table.
